Hornblower! I really love those novels. Did you catch the A&E series that was
just on. If not you missed a good miniseries. Hopefully they will continue
making episodes. They were true to the books.

Instead of being out paddling this holiday I ended up building a patio. But as
a reward I decided I was going to read a book. I picked Robert Heinlen's
"Starship Troopers" which I had not read in 15 years. Don't bother with the
movie, I saw the adverts and could tell they just stole the title from the
book... Mr. Rico, the "hero" if you can even call him that, of Starships
Troopers is sorta similar to a young Hornblower. I think most people who like
the Hornblower series would like "Starship Troopers." There are points in the
book, which was published in 1959, about youth violence and gangs that sound
exactly like the comments made today. Its educational to think that in 40 years
nothing has really changed.

Good book skip the movie.

Later...
Dan

I may have to re-visit the Heinlein of my youth.

It's hard to beat the multi-faceted Hornblower. If not nonchalantly
extinguishing the fuse of an enemy cannonball on deck, he's sailing months
without sight of shore for a perfect landfall. All with the inner turmoil
masked by impervious demeanor.

But what engaged the interest of this Florida surfer during the summer flats
one year, pre-kayak days, casual grab off the library shelf, was the amazing
descriptions of conducting a naval battle in Napoleonic technology.

Tides, winds and their patterns, sun and moon, channel currents,
weather--all entered in to history changing decisions made without radio,
faxes, or GPS. Well researched stuff by Forester, easy to read. And should
be familiar territory to some of the scribes in this group whose wisdom I
humbly seek to internalize. Check it out!
