Shawn,

Although this does not guarentee that you will keep your hands from getting
smashed there is one trick to help improve your chances of finding a bow without
getting pinched against the hull. When you rub your hands along the hull keep
them flat but hold them at right angles to the hull - the sides of your hands
rub the hull, not the palm. This allows your hands to make contact farter out
from the hull, and your hands are more likely to get bumped to one side or the
other when the bow comes, rather than pinched against the hull. Having your
hands flat along the hull is asking to get speared.
