Susan,

I changed the subject line to increase the odds that you get a useful
response from one of the people such as Matt Broze; Nick Schade; Bob Denton;
... etc. that are experienced with building the boats.

As far as a 16' boat weighing 35lbs, unless you're talking fully loaded with
a weeks supply of gear and food or if it's built by anyone in Britain, <g>
;-) it's not an unusual weight for what we refer to as light weight boats.

The ones in that weight range often achieve it, by both having a fairly thin
"top deck" and using various techniques such as vacuum or pressurized
bladder during the lay-up in the mold to squeeze out the excess resin.

This generally means that (depending on what needs to be repaired), you'll
end up with a few more ounces of weight (maybe even a few pounds if the
repair is extensive) than the boat had when it first came from the factory.
The basic trick is to make sure you don't use too much resin. Remember
though, that too little can be bad as well - pinhole leaks, or a patch that
doesn't stick.

Having given this little bit of advice, I'll shut up now and let the experts
on this list give you the truly useful information, such as how to actually
achieve the good results you want.

Happy Paddling - Saul
