Dave, If you are looking for a GPS, I would recommend the Garmin GPS 12. I bought one about six month ago for around $150 at REI. I haven't had any problems with it, but as you probably know, I don't use it very much. I used it just enough to know how to use it, and that's about it. Navigating by compass is much more fun and adventurous. Using a GPS makes navigation too easy, but it is nice to have one as a back up for safety. One word of advice is to not carry the GPS on the aft deck of your kayak during crossings, because one of your paddling partners may not notice it and won't believe you have one!
