[Paddlewise] Nissequoge River later this summer

I am working on a good downriver put-in/take-out. The problem is the
river is not navigable at low water and, near the mouth, runs at almost
three knots at max flood or ebb. You want to put in near the mouth 2
hours before high water, paddle up river on the flood (changes from open
salt water to meandering brackish water wetland stream in about 5
miles), rest at the State park near Route 25, return on the ebb.

Unfortunately, the Town of Smithtown has a stranglehold on launch sites
downriver, especially on weekends: They are restricted to residents.
On weekdays, nonresidents can park and launch from Short Beach. I am
researching some unconventional downriver spots for a weekend launch.

The alternative is to launch from the State park upriver an hour or two
before high water, paddle against the flood (only about 1/2 knot
upstream) turn around at slack water before getting too near the mouth
and paddle upriver against the ebb.
