My single sea kayak is "Hinayana". There are two main schools of thought in Buddhism; the first, Mahayana (or "the greater vessel"), holds that no individual can progress in spiritual growth except as we all progress - so that we are all responsible for each other's progress. The second school, Hinayana (or "the smaller vessel") believes that we must each take responsibility for our own journey - which to me is the epitome of what solo sea-kayaking is about. (I am not myself a Buddhist, so I apologise to any Buddhists on the list for any over-simplification or misrepresentation of their beliefs. I hope they will take my adoption of a Buddhist concept as honouring, not expropriating, the idea.)
