I just got back from a 5 day WW trip through Desolation/Gray canyons on the Green River about 100 miles northeast of Powell and it was over 100 every day. The shade from cottonwood trees at our campsites was a lifesaver. I just got into sea kayaking and haven't made the trip to Powell yet and will probably go this fall. Many of my friends are power boaters and go there a lot. I would not recommend a houseboat. They are so slow that you would have to spend days getting to a good kayaking area. A week might not be enough time and I think the cost is pretty high. The far east end near the mouths of the San Juan and Dirty Devil rivers looks promising. That is where I would put in for a self supported trip. I have driven past that end on the way back from river trips and it looks interesting with a varied shoreline and little traffic. It appears to be accessible from the road with possibly a short portage. The water quality is reportedly very bad near the major marinas. (Lake Foul) I'm looking forward to paddling into the more remote canyons and slot canyons when I get the time. There are some good Lake Powell guide books. They are oriented toward power boaters but have useful info. Check REI or specialty boookstores. Getting a lift from a big power boat is another option- but you would have to arrange a shuttle of some kind or paddle all the way back. E-mail me if you are interested in a trip down. I live about 5 hours north of Lake Powell in Park City and am looking for sea kayak paddling companions.
