I read their comments about it being "found that zebra stripes on boat hulls
repel sharks" so I took it to mean they painted zebra stripes on the bottom 
of their boats.  

I have never heard of this.  

However, I am aware of tests that were conducted using black and white
stripes on dive suits because some sharks are afraid of sea snakes (which
are black and white striped and poisonous).  However, they were not aware 
that some sharks actually eat sea snakes and the black/white striped dive 
suits were a failure (though nobody got eaten, the dive suits did not scare
the sharks).
