Well, as those who subscribe to the nyckayaker listserver know, we earlier took out some NYC firemen in kayaks from the Downtown Boathouse launch spot to the Statue of Liberty. They went back to the Yorkville Firehouse (East 85th St in Manhattan near Lexington Ave) full of enthusiasm about the trip and now I think the whole battalion wants to come. :-) Some 14 or so have signed up. (Better be no fires on the Eastside that day!!) The trip will be next week, August 5th Thursday meeting at the Downtown Boathouse at 10 am. The ones Tim Gamble and I took out last time were a great bunch of guys; I can't say enough good things about them; they were highly disciplined, strong, and quick learners. They stayed in a tight grouping and listened to everything we had to say regarding safety, speed, etc. the waters did get rough in a threatening sudden storm but they handled the gusty winds extremely well. So I probably don't necessarily need help with this largish group but it would be nice to have some other experienced paddlers along for escort. Our plan is to stop at the Morris Basin's marina restaurant for lunch on the way back. It all should be fun. Rick Muller earlier gave me a phone number for the John McKean Fireboat that is moored at a pier just a bit north of the Downtown Boathouse. I intend to call there after this trip to see if any of those on board might want to join us next time, although being on the water would be a busman's holiday for them. I also hope we can make contact with the firehouses that protect the Boathouse's Tribeca neighborhood to offer the firefighters there the same sort of trip. Anyone have contact with them? Experienced paddlers interested in helping out on August 5th, call me or send email. see ya, ralph diaz p.s. I am sending this to PaddleWise in case there are any NYC types who are on that list but not on nyckayaker. -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ralph Diaz . . .
