Yes I have, years ago, when a group of volunteer paddlers I organized from the Washington Kayak Club went out on a stormy day to test and compare rescue techniques. You are right on in your critisms of the stirrup rescue (the version of it that fastens a rope under a paddle shaft that must be kept perpendicular to the kayaks anyhow). We succeded but it took way way longer than any other rescue we tried. Just getting the paddle to stay oriented right was a major hassle. The techniques described in the "Rescues" manual in http://www.marinerkayaks.com was partly the result of those tests.
