I'm after some opinions here please:

After the Eskimo roll, what are the next best options for self-rescue in a
decked boat?

Personally, I choose the re-entry and roll with a paddle float as the next
best option, because it gets you back up rather easily (and upright) and
allows you the luxury of having an outrigger while pumping/bailing your
kayak.

Thanks!

1) The Float roll. Grab the float off the deck and roll up without popping
the spraydeck. Easy to learn, but if you can roll with the paddle you will
probably keep trying that until you run out of air and bail out. Also you
must have it prepared in advance.
2)The outrigger paddle float with a fixed outrigger. The reenter and roll
scoops up more water (unless you can first fasten your spray deck--easier
said than done). Then with the reenter and roll you must pump the kayak out
without being stabilized (unless you have an electric or foot pump and a
good brace). The outrigger paddle float is easier to learn so will work for
someone who hasn't yet learned a good roll. You don't have to put your head
back into or under the icy water either.
3)I'd practice the unfixed paddlefloat rescue, the reenter and paddlefloat
roll, and the cowboy rescue too. Never know when you might find yourself
without the proper equipment so don't depend on just one.
You'll find a detailed discussion of several of these in the "manuals"
section of our website.
