I cant seem to get the reentry part of the reentry and roll. When I try to get into the cockpit my pfd's buoyancy prevents me from pulling my butt into the seat. What am I doing wrong? Larry, With a PFD on sometimes you have to tilt the upside down kayak a little away from you when doing the reentry part of the reentry and roll. That way as your PFD is keeping your body a bit to the side, the cockpit is at the correct angle to allow you to slide back in it. Larry, You have to really grab that coaming hard and PULL yourself back in! It helps to keep your legs together, but bent at 90% from your body. It's something like a fireman pulling up his suspenders, you really pull the kayak on! At least that's my take ,,, - Scott -----Original Message----- From: ne111er_at_webtv.net <ne111er_at_webtv.net> To: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net <paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net> Date: Saturday, July 31, 1999 2:44 PM Subject: [Paddlewise] self rescue options > I cant seem to get the reentry part of the reentry and roll. What am I doing wrong? The side reentry is tricky for me. I prefer the somersault reentry with the kayak completely inverted. You get under the kayak and face the stern with your head inside the kayak (you can breath the air in the kayak). Once set up, you do a somersault and push your feet over your head and into the kayak. You end up sitting in the kayak in an inverted position. The somersault is a tad tricky with the PFD, but once you're in the kayak the PFD forces you into the seat. The next tricky bit is getting your paddle set up and doing the roll. Larry; Wierd as it may seem the trick to a quick and easy re-enty is in what you do with your paddle. My experience in teaching people is that they tend to fumble with the paddle or they hold the paddle in an inefficient way and it forces them to attempt to climb into the boat from a bad angle. Try this and see if it helps: If you are setting up for a right-hand role place the paddle parallel to the kayak and hold it and the cockpit coaming with your left hand (on the left-hand side of the boat with your right hand on the right side of the boat/coaming). This keeps the paddle out of the way and lets you easily set the boat on edge so that you can climb in smoothly. Next, work your way in as far as possible without your head going under water then take a couple of deep breaths and commit to climbing in the rest of the way with with your head under. Finish by pulling yourself into the seat (your hands are still in their original positions) and putting your feet on the foot rests. Your left hand is still holding the boat and paddle so reach up now with your right hand and grab the paddle with it as well. You are pretty much automatically in your set-up position so, do a little blade adjustment and role up. Doing it this way will keep the whole process much more organized and smooth which also has the added benefit of giving you more time since you will not have to waste effort flailing around. Try it, you'll like it. John Winskill ne111er_at_webtv.net wrote: > > I cant seem to get the reentry part of the reentry and roll. You don't really need to be totally in the cockpit with your feet on the pegs; as long as you have your right knee hooked under the thigh brace you can snap up. -- Steve Cramer Test Scoring and Reporting Services University of Georgia Athens, GA 30602-5593 *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
