My single sea kayak is "Hinayana". There are two main schools of thought in Buddhism; the first, Mahayana (or "the greater vessel"), holds that no individual can progress in spiritual growth except as we all progress - so that we are all responsible for each other's progress. The second school, Hinayana (or "the smaller vessel") believes that we must each take responsibility for our own journey - which to me is the epitome of what solo sea-kayaking is about. (I am not myself a Buddhist, so I apologise to any Buddhists on the list for any over-simplification or misrepresentation of their beliefs. I hope they will take my adoption of a Buddhist concept as honouring, not expropriating, the idea.) I have a simple way of naming my kayaks. I named them after someone who I work with. He is supposed to relieve me of the afternoon shift I work at midnight, only problem is he calls in sick all the time. Usually about 20 times a year. This means I have to work overtime alot.... a real lot. So, I named my Sea Lion Eclipse "Doug Day I" And my tandem Perception Jocassee, "Doug Day II. I can only thank Doug for calling in sick so much, he has provided me two boats with which I enjoy so much with my family, at no cost to myself! This is my way of "taking the good with the bad". *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
