Howdy,

Thought I could give a little bit of insight to the VHF discussion. I am the
product line manager for Raytheon Marine's VHF line. We manufacture two
submersible handheld products; the RAY102 and RAY106. Either of these
products will fit in your PFD pocket and are rated to JIS-7 (submerged for a
minimum of 30 mintues at a depth of 3 feet). I've had a RAY106 in my Skerray
since I started paddling 3 years ago.

I realize I'm "blowing my own horn" here but they really are submersible.
The RAY102 has a 600mA/h NiCad with 1, 3, and 5 Watt selectable output and
the RAY106 has a 1200mA/h NiCad with 1, 3, and 6 Watt selectable output.
Both are programmed with the NOAA weather channels and feature a Weather
Alert (special alert broadcasts for nasty weather).

In all fairness to the competition, you may also want to look at the Standard
Horizon HX-350 submersible handheld. It has 1 and 5 Watt output and an 1100
mA/h NiCad. Retail pricing is as follows:

RAY102: $229
RAY106: $299
HX-350: $279

These are the only three TRULY submersible marine VHF handhelds on the
market. I don't believe the Yeasu products carry NOAA weather channels and
are more land mobile oriented than marine (and definitely not submersible).

Thought I'd throw my two cents worth in and make my "pitch" at the same time.
Any of these radios are available at West Marine, Boater's World, Boat US,
Consumer Electronics, and many other Marine Electronics stores.

If anyone would like more information, just zip me an E-MAIL.

Cheers.

JP
