This reminds me of Relationships 101, in a double with my wife-to-be,
trying to make way against a stiff current. Paddling hard for me meant
increased use of muscle/exertion and for her it meant increasing stroke rate. 

It wasn't a pretty sight..... and it wasn't until we were off the water and
had time to calm down that we debriefed and learned that there are
different ways to "paddle harder".

We have ended up with single kayaks!
