Order Diptera - Flies
Family Psychodidae - Moth Flies and Sand Flies
    Most of the northern species in this family are harmless to man, but the
species in the genus Phlebotomus, often called sand flies, are bloodsucking;
these occur in the southern states and in the tropics. Sand flies are known
to act as vectors of several diseases in various parts of the world:
pappataci fever in the Mediterranean region and south Asia; kala-azar and
oriental sore in South America, n. Africa, and s. Asia; espundia, oroya fever
(verruga peruana) in S. America.
