Debbie,

The main REI in Seattle sells braided yellow polypro rescue rope. It is fairly
soft on the hand, but at 1/2" (I think), it is rather stiff.

At several army surplus stores, I have found 3/16", 1/4" and 5/16" line
(or some such assortment) which is supposedly braided polypro over a linear
nylon core. It's not as supple as pure nylon, but if floats, it's cheap,
and as long as you make a diligent effort to work the knots down well and
snuggly, they hold well. It seems to come only in black, olive green and
, more rarely, black and olive co-braid.

Yours in cordage nerdiness,
Mike Wagenbach
