What you guys needed along on your trip were some sea kayaking westies :-)

Seeing blue whales from a kayak would have been really cool (somewhat
intimidating, too, I would think).  We got to see 10 of them while on a 
whale watching trip out of Santa Barbara about three summers ago.  Never 
saw the entire whale at one time they are so huge. Just a hump or a tale.
