One of the survival books I have said to dig the hole behind the first dune. I was under the impression that the sand was filtering the water. The idea that fresh water is floating on top of the salt water makes more sense to me. The solar still is another idea that I have seen in survival books. Works both on the beach and in the desert. You were supposed to pitch the plastic so that the water would drip into a pan/can. To make it even more efficient the Survivor should place a straw into the can, sealed around the plastic "tent" so that they could drink as the water became available. This would also prevent the release of the heat and humidity from the still to get a drink. I never figured out where you were supposed to get the long straw? And to keep the human waste thread/subject going, if you are really desperate for water you relieve yourself in the hole, urine and otherwise. Pitch the plastic over the hole, and walla! The solar still will remove the water from the waste for drinking.... And not I'm NOT making this up! 8-) Lunch anyone? Would you like some water with your food? 8-) Hope this helps... 8-) Dan McCarty *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************Received on Mon Aug 30 1999 - 10:29:02 PDT
