The newer Volvos, like Saabs, have a place to screw in a rain gutter simulator. Open the side doors and see if there's something like that on just below the roof. We use a Thule rack on our '96 850 wagon. The Thule clips for this car have small pins that slip into corresponding holes in the top of the door jambs. It's easy to position the bars perfectly every time, and the roof is renforced to accommodate a rack in these spots.
