*** Canoe racers use wheels in dry creek

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. (AP) - With drought leaving the Rancocas Creek so
low that algae is growing and the bottom is clearly visible,
organizers of a canoe race decided to shift the event to land.
Organizers of the Up the Creek Festival thought about canceling
Saturday's Canoe Derby but decided they could pull it off without a
paddle. Instead of paddling a quarter-mile upstream, competitors will
push their boats on wheels for an eighth of a mile on a paved street.
The race drew about 100 people in its first year last year. Jack
Naughton, a local electrician, used wheels from shopping carts to
make four gray aluminum canoes land-worthy. They're hard to control,
he said, but the race will go on. See

The race went off without a hitch (well, maybe some reins). It was in the
TrentonTimes for sunday. There was also a longer canoe race in the schedule
to run between towns. Fortunately the area got nearly 4 inches of rain the
night before, so they were able to run it on the water. Good runs but with
the length of the drought things like small trees were now growing in the
streambed so a lot of scrapes & scratches ensued.
