Well, what started out as a simple invitation for Maligiaq to visit Miami
(since he was going to be in Orlando with Greg Stamer) has now snowballed.
My experience with racing is zero, so bear with me.

I have been in touch with the coordinator for the1999 Kayak Challenge to
benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) (he said they (the race?) is on
www.activeusa.com). Maliqiaq wants to race and will also be willing to
demonstrate his rolling techniques.

The event will take place on Saturday, September 18, 1999, on Key Biscayne
(it's all part of Miami-Dade County but we will continue to refer to Miami
(there is a municipality that is the City of Miami - causes endless
confusion).

There's a 5-mile (18-39 yrs) race and a 16-mile for the over 40s. He will
get Board approval tonight, but is sure there will be no problem in making
exceptions for M to participate. M is 17. He can race in his race of
choice! So far they have 38 paid up and another 20 who said they would be
participating.

Angel Perez (member of 1999 US National (and World) Canoe and Kayak Team will
be making a special appearance (I think he will race as well), Bruce Gibson
(well-known Florida paddler, I'm told), and Dr. William "Bill" Munoz
(committee chairman) will also be competing.

I am hereby requesting advice and information:

I need the first Paddlewise note that went out about Maligiaq (who he is
etc.) as well as subsequent ones (I didn't save them) Here again, just from
one person. Perhaps Greg Stamer has everything? My Sea Kayaker Magazines
are all over the place, but I would like to read the articles - if I can get
dates I can presumably get them online. I will be preparing a news release
that the Cystic Fibrosis will put out re M's "special appearance."

We need logistical help: M's (rolling) kayak is in Orlando so we need to
bring it to Miami (we can probably arrange "meet half-way exchanges" possibly
with club members from Broward or Palm Beach County - and then for the return
trip.

Then we need to borrow a racing kayak for him. The CFF contact will approach
Sal Hesded (Miami Kayak & Canoe) who is a Perception and Dagger dealer and
will be demoing some boats, to see if he can provide.

I don't know if my friends at either Atlantic Coast Kayak, Waterways Kayak,
or Florida Bay Outfitters are interested in offering a boat or being
corporate sponsors (if that is applicable) or joint corporate sponsors or if
we just have an informal "local paddlers" group to assist. There is a $50
registration plus he needs to get pledges (this is a floating walk-a-thon of
sorts!). So, I am hereby inviting those who wish to make donations (payable
to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation) to send them to me:
Sandy Kramer
15541 SW 109 Terrace
Miami, Florida 33196

If, for any reason, Maligiaq is unable to make it, I have another friend who
is competing and the money will still go to this worthy cause, unless you ask
me to return your check.

Well, this is it for starters. While I'm at it, I have plenty of room if
anyone would like to come for the race.

I will be forwarding this to local clubs and individual paddlers on my list.

Have I forgotten anything?
