Hi guys

Returning briefly to the hot weather vs. PFD's debate: I finally tried out
a friend's inflatable PFD the other day. Even popped the cartridge, at her
request. I was really impressed at the buoyancy. The thing that really
sells me is that with it on and uninflated, it's comfortable, and if you
get a wee bit nervous you can blow it up by mouth, thus not "wasting" a
CO2 cartridge. I'm getting one, and promise never to paddle without it on,
even in So. Fla. ("Never?" "Well, hardly ever."...) Slainte! e

I wonder what happens if you have it mouth inflated and then get tossed and
forgetting, pull the CO2 inflator tab.

Does it have a safety valve or do you hear a loud bang?

I asked the owner, what if you pull the tab when it's partly inflated and
you want to top it up in a hurry, and she didn't know. Maybe someone on
the list does? e

big disclaimer: i haven't worked with inflatables in 9 years, but i was a
member of the biggest org. using them ;-) or more like o-) anyway, if they
were full and you pulled, pop <8-( you deflate them through the same tube
you inflate, but i believe a "high pressure squeeze" would shut a valve to
save the user from becoming "stupid" real fast at their own hands. a slower
release, such as to deflate would be ok. [isn't that how rafts/inflatables
valves work?]

I once did this to a Rescue float I was testing that had an added CO2
inflator and no safety valve. I pulled the cord and pushed it to the other
side of a car. it didn't explode like I had expected it might but for a week
every time I taped it, it rang like a bell.

Since your lungs can only produce about 3 1/2 psi, filling the pfd
by mouth will make very little difference in the final inflation
pressure when you trigger the high pressure CO2 bottle.
In other words "it don't ammount to a fart in a wirlwind".

I believe this is misleading. Though mouth inflation is done at relatively
low pressure, it is possible to fill the inflatable PFD by mouth. The *very
small* (in volume) CO2 cylinder has to have an *initially* very high pressure
so that it can contain the necessary number of air molecules to fully inflate
the PFD. When exhausted, the CO2 cylinder does not exert its full initial
pressure.

Consequently, if you inflate the PFD to fullness with your mouth, *and then*
the CO2 cylinder is triggered, it will endavor to *add* its molecules to the
ones your mouth put there -- possibly causing the pressure to rise to
(roughly) twice what the CO2 cylinder could achieve alone. This might exceed
the ability of the PFD to hold air -- in other words, it might pop.

My guess is that mfrs anticipate someone doing this and build in a safety
factor of two or three so it probably would not leak. Anybody tried this?

I don't know for sure, but my guess would be inflatable PFDs have the same
sort of "over-pressure relief valve" as scuba diving Bouyancy Compensators
do. It's a plastic disc held down by a spring of a rated strength. When the
pressure inside the vest exceeds the determined amount (which should be well
below what the fabric and seams can withstand), the pressure pushes the disc
open, bleeding off air until the pressure lowers to the point the spring can
push the disc shut again. Simple, and fairly foolproof.
