There was an article in the local newspaper up here last summer that discussed the concept of using pepper sprays designed as bear repellants on objects. (ie. spray the object with the intent of making it unattractive to the bears) Conclusion - the bears loved the taste of the pepper! It works when used in an intense direct shot to the face, but just isn't intense enough to act as a repellant.
