Elaine,
It use to be legal to bait for bears here in Oregon. Allthough I never did
it, I have talked to people that did. Some bears will come a running at the
smell of
rotting flesh. One guy told me that some rotting beef with mollasses spread
around was his favorite recipe for baiting - a sweet and sour recipe I guess.

Once when I was at a sportsmen show, I saw a can with a title something like
"10 Dead Horse". Supposedly it was so rank, that they compared it to the smell
of 10 dead rotting horses. It was for baiting bears.
