Elaine, It use to be legal to bait for bears here in Oregon. Allthough I never did it, I have talked to people that did. Some bears will come a running at the smell of rotting flesh. One guy told me that some rotting beef with mollasses spread around was his favorite recipe for baiting - a sweet and sour recipe I guess. Once when I was at a sportsmen show, I saw a can with a title something like "10 Dead Horse". Supposedly it was so rank, that they compared it to the smell of 10 dead rotting horses. It was for baiting bears. Brian. <SNIP> >The best thing I could think of as a repellent was whatever gives decaying >flesh its nauseating aroma.
