One more: paddling hard to see what those pelicans and terns are diving on, outside, and hoping you get there before it's gone. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************

How bout; 11) Paddling fast when crossing wide shipping lanes. 12) Paddling fast while playing with the Dolphins. 13) Paddling fast for aerobic excercise or just for the heck of it. 14) Paddling hard and fast to get to your scheduled shuttle at the take out. You are on a multi day trip and weather slowed you down. 14) Paddling fast to catch up with de group cause I got to the put in late, oops. How about paddling hard when you get close to the water fountains and then just glide under the spray? Which, BTW, is what I'll be doing this afternoon. Hot Florida summers, you know!!! Paddling hard against a strong current to make progress. This reminds me of Relationships 101, in a double with my wife-to-be, trying to make way against a stiff current. Paddling hard for me meant increased use of muscle/exertion and for her it meant increasing stroke rate. It wasn't a pretty sight..... and it wasn't until we were off the water and had time to calm down that we debriefed and learned that there are different ways to "paddle harder". We have ended up with single kayaks! Did I missed any? >> The very first thing that comes to my mind is crossing boating channels. The next one is to catch the runaway hat/glove/whatever that is on it way to somewhere you didn't intend to go. The next one is because some people get a tad irritated if you can't keep up with them. It feels good to use my strength and I like the feeling of the breeze on still days and the sound of the water on the bow. My other main reason for being able to go faster than my usual pace is just so that I can if I need to. The DC police were out checking motorboats for all the various rules they can break. I heard the officer ask on guy with a JS what the horsepower of his craft was. I heard him say 130. That made me wonder how much horsepower one human female is rated at. Odd thought while paddling.
