If you're not paddling at all, is it fear, uncertainty, burnout or a feeling of mortality? Get back on the water, Doug. I know the feeling of leaving a sport I love because of a combination of the above. In my case it was competitive skiing and I never regret getting back to sking after a few years away (but for recreation only). Once you leave, though, for those reasons, it's hard to go back. It took the encouragement of a friend to get me back on snow. Find some easy area on an easy day. Gunkhole through bays and look at the trees, listen to the birds. Drift around and say goodbye to the wildlife heading south for the winter. Feel the water on the paddle, drag your hands in the water, lie back and look at the clouds. That's why you paddle. Work your way back to the little adventures and leave the big ones for the youth.
