There are, of course, lots of backpacking books on food prep. Most of
these books have the reputation of being a little too spartan for kayaking,
but one that I think stands out is "Wilderness Cuisine". Most everything
in this book is excellent. (My favorite is the Puttanesca recipe, which
makes me salivate just thinking about it...)

There's also the old standby "Kayak Cookery" by Linda Daniels (I think),
which isn't quite as gourmet, but is still very good, extremely creative
and, as title implies, specific for kayaking. Lots of good ideas for
organization also.

Another book that I like a lot is "High Trail cookery" (or High Trail
something). Most of the recipes in this one are dried (in fact, she
suggests drying things like casseroles that I never woulda thought could be
dried), and thus work well for kayak trips, esp lazy ones where you just
want to add water and cook or long ones where space and simplicity are more
important. My favorite recipe in this is for Tamale Pie.

And one last good source of excellent (almost too many) ideas is the
Cooking Light magazine/books. Even though not wilderness-oriented, many of
the recipe ideas can be adapted easily enough to the outdoors.

PS Hmmmmm. Just thinking that, for those of us who regard the social
evenings in camp with great food almost as highly as the paddling itself --
maybe we could put together a "Paddlewise cookbook" with contributions from
the group. I suppose it could be a little redundant, since there are a lot
of good books already out there--but if there were enough contributions, I
might even volunteer to edit it (words I'll probably regret later...).
