Hi Bob: Start with a high stroke (in which the paddle more vertical while pulling rather than the low stroke in which the paddle is more horizontal while pulling). Then instead of pulling straight back, pull slightly diagonally away from the boat -- scything wheat with straight arms. This slight diagonal direction is the key to getting lift from the wing blade.
