Several additional thoughts on how to participate:

1. Kevin Kelly, who plans to participate reminds me that anyone with a
folding kayak should have no problem with worries about car shuttles,
trucks, whatever to get their boat back to a car. Hmm, folding kayaks.
Why didn't I think of that! :-) (Kevin will start from the 79th St Boat
Basin where he keeps a boat stored and will just knock it down to get
back there or to his apartment)

2. Bill Leonhardt who is on both of these lists reminded me of the
possibility of starting from Dyckman St. north of the GW Bridge. It is
actually what I did last year with the swimmers but I forgot about that.
You could paddle from there down to the swim and then come back up with
the swimmers and continue on back to your car. Here is the scoop if you
decide to help out by starting from up there:

There is street parking right at the launch site at Dyckman street. It
should be reasonably safe as the area is still highly active in
mid-September with softball teams and picnickers (the former park there
cars there and no one wants to mess with the cars of guys who are
carrying bats!). If you felt your car unsafe there, there are parking
garages just a block or so away along Dyckman. The problem would be
that to get back and forth from them while leaving your boat at the
beach on Dyckman. If you had a cart you could park in one of the two or
so garages (they are dirt cheap) and cart your boat the equivalent of
about two blocks to the beach and launch.

If you plan to do this, you should allow yourself about 3 hours to cover
the 7.8 miles which would get you down to the Chelsea Piers in plenty of
time. So start at around 9:30 am (no later than 10 am) from the Dyckman
launch site. That would give you a nice paddle down and then back with
the swimmers.

If you are coming from the South go up the Westside highway north to the
Dyckman St exit. As you come on to city streets, make your first
available left. Then a left again on Dyckman which takes you to the
Hudson. You will be right alongside the garages as you get on to
Dyckman. You could scout the parking around the launch site first to
see if it makes you comfortable. If not, double back the block or so to
the parking garages.

If you are coming from the North on the Westside highway there is an
exit that tees you into Dyckman. The river is to your right and the
parking garages to the left as described above.
