Some will remember my newbie adventures this past winter. The dangers really
never sunk in, although many here did their best, until this summer I took
someone out for their first trip.

I looked over at him just in time to see this unmistakable look of "I'm
going over". The water was warm and flat, and I had gone over self and
assisted rescues with him before we got 20 feet from the put in. We had no
trouble getting him back in the kayak and finishing our trip.

But what nagged at me that day (and still does) as I watched him weave and
wobble along the river was "Damn, that was me not too long ago."

There was of course, one big difference. If I had gone over in those first
months, I would have been alone, in 30-something degree water. I could only
speculate on what the consequences may have been.
