For this very reason, when I re-gelcoat my boat, I'm going to colour 
everything below the waterline that radioactive, high-visibility 
greeny-yellow you see on ocean racing clothing (assuming I can find the 
right pigment.) In addition to being easier to spot when you're capasized 
and in trouble, it should make your boat stand out miles away on roof racks 
if someone stole it.
