There are plenty of "scientists" out there that are not necessarily trustworthy authorities. If there's one thing that I learned from my university days it was that you can get a PHD and still be relatively stupid. Non-scientific media COULD be based on hard research... couldn't it? But, as we should all know, our friends the sharks certainly don't need any further bad press!
