Heard from Greg Stamer who is back in the Orlando area and ready to meet Maligiaq, Floyd willing. However, a message from John Heath indicates that AMTRAK has cancelled the trains into Orlando. I've been saying a few prayers for M's boat that is stored in Hollywood on the "wrong" side of the Intracoastal Waterway. In fact, it's right "on" the Intracoastal. There's a strip of land between the ocean and the Intracoastal. The latest report is that Miami-Dade and Broward counties should "only" experience tropical storms. But coastal locations will still take a beating. My fingers are crossed, especially since the cost of putting the accordion-style shutters on my house was $4,600. I opted to put them on the 2 rear sliding doors and bathroom window that face the lake (for a "mere" $1,600) and are more subject to flying debris turning themselves into projectiles. The downside is that I was told it would take about 10 weeks and they're not ready yet!!! I will slowly (as the budget permits) shutter up the rest of the house. Assuming, of course, that there is still a house to shutter up. Which reminds me of a friend who, after Hurricane Andrew, said," The shutters held up great. It was the ##_at__at_## roof that blew off! "Hurricane has put kayak race in limbo" is the headline in today's Miami Herald (www.herald.com) sports section. It goes on to say that they have 70 participants signed up and are expecting to raise $30,000 for the cystic fibrosis foundation. To date, I have had zero contributions/pledges in Maligiaq's name. (Excluding Kirk Olsen's $50 donation to cover the race registration.) I'll kick in something, of course, but I was thinking in terms of $20 and the "suggested" pledge amount is $300. I don't like to beg...but...... On the other hand....if 1)Maligiaq can't get here or 2)his rolling boat is destroyed or 3)the race is cancelled, I guess I'll have a few more (or less??!) things to be concerned about.
