i missed the start of this

I'd definitely keep my spare paddle on my rear deck. you may need it while not onshore. I recently got munched by a big wave  close to shore but not at a landable point, and it snapped my paddle as I got tumbled. I lost my hold on the two pieces. I was very glad to have that spare readily on hand on the rear deck as I retrieved it and put it  together while still in the water -once I'd swum out of the danger zone.

I also recently (after the above) started practising retrieving half my spare while tipped over and rolling with it. I've now done this a pool but have yet to try to try in more testing conditions.
