I haven't tried this with my sea kayak paddle yet, but years ago when I was
whitewater paddling, I found a small tripod camera base and anchored it to
the center of my paddle.

When I attached a small Canon waterproof 35mm camera, I always had the
camera right in front of me ready to go. Water spots were a problem, so I
lived with them.

In my sea kayak I utilize my Nikon with large zoom lens attached. I keep it
in a drybag that sits on the bottom of the boat between my knees. Yes, I
put the camera and lens at risk, but it only comes out of the bag if it is
safe to release my skirt. The increase in quality of photographs is worth
the risk. Instead stacks of pictures with allot of water and tiny kayakers
I would have with a 28 to 35mm lens waterproof automatic camera, I have
stacks of pictures of my kayaking buddies filling the picture. Its not for
everybody, but it works for me.
