<It will be my first boat, and I'm looking for something that's general
<purpose -- that I can use for day paddles as well as longer trips here on
<the West Coast (Southern California).

My first purchase was a K-1 and I have never regretted it. NOT the ideal
Sunday afternoon paddle. Always takes an hour to assemble. If that's what
your going to use it for, you ideally have a place to leave it assembled. I
hear the new K-1's assemble faster.
The K-1 is a superb expedition boat. In rough seas it is second to none in
speed and tracking. By all means use the rudder, though. Only takes a second
to assemble, and who wants to paddle 20 miles trying to track straight
without a rudder? Exhausting!

Exhausting? Well I suppose it can be, if you have not managed to trim
the boat correctly. If you get the boat trimmed correctly it is not the
least bit difficult to make it track straight without the use of the
rudder. If you would rather not bother, that's fine. You can always
adjust for a poorly trimmed boat by using the rudder. In such cases the
rudder is a real energy saver. But there are other alternatives that
allow you to avoid both the exhaustion and the use of the rudder.
