Sunday night a man fell 20 to 30 feet from an ore boat into Lake Superior and swam nearly five miles to shore in 46 degree water without a PFD. Some of the factors in his survival: he is a good, strong swimmer, he has a lot of mass (230 pounds), the heat generated by his exertion apparently made up for that carried away by the cold water, and the wind and waves were in his favor.
