Hi, these are from the latest Fishlink news: FL Red Tides. On Sept. 27, 1999, county health departments began advising people to avoid beaches and waterways because of separate red tides along the FL panhandle coast in the Gulf of Mexico and south of Jacksonville along the Atlantic coast. The Gulf bloom reportedly began in Port St. Joe about several weeks ago, while the Atlantic bloom was reported to have begun about a week ago in Duval County. Individuals on beaches have reported eye and respiratory irritation. On Sept. 28 and 29, 1999, a series of fish kills (mullet, trout, redfish, and sheepshead) attributed to the red tide were reported in the Intracoastal Waterway in St. Johns County. [Assoc Press, Jacksonville Times-Union] Seafood-Transmitted Diseases. On Sept. 16, 1999, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published (in Emerging Infectious Diseases - http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/eid/vol5no5/mead.htm ) the results of a study finding that tainted food sickens 76 million Americans and kills 5,000 each year. The single largest known contributor to these illnesses, causing 9.2 million cases annually, is reported to be Norwalk-like viruses found in shellfish from waste-polluted waters. [Minneapolis Star Tribune] {Freshwater Extinction Study. A study of extinction rates of freshwater animals by 2 Canadian scientists, published in the October 1999 issue of Conservation Biology, suggests that these animals are becoming extinct at a rate 5 times faster than land species.} [Environment News Service] ...(maybe that means in Canada you SHOULD pee on land instead of in the river? ;-) No, let's not open that one up again! e ) Elaine Harmon - eilidh_at_dc.seflin.org - eharmon_at_cs.miami.edu *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************Received on Wed Oct 13 1999 - 08:38:11 PDT
