I was so inspired by the idea posted last week to the list to have a pulley system whereby the kayak can be lifted directly from the car to the ceiling of the garage, that I pulled out a pad and sketched the scheme out. This would eliminate the backaches I get from hauling the boat to and from the top of the car to slings on the wall of the garage as well as the dings the boat gets from inadvertent passes into the basketball pole on the driveway on one end and the lawn mower on the other... I began the process with no concept of block and tackle (is it a gender thing?) and eventually figured out how to use the pulleys to divide and conquer the weight. I can now lift the 52 lbs. up with no difficulty! I'm using a total of 6 pulleys, though. My biggest problem was that when I went out to the garage to check out if I had the ceiling space to do this, it was nighttime and the garage door was closed. When I started the assembly, the door was open. Hmmm. The boat is just about 6 inches narrower than the space ABOVE the garage door when opened -- a bit too close given my pulley "talents." So the boat will be raised to a point just under the open door (see photo). And being height-challenged means I won't have any problem with head injury walking in the garage when the car is outside. Just don't ask how I broke my windshield wiper blades (ok, some climbing was necessary).
