In the spirit of the discussion of responsible retailers, check out what PK Paddles has posted here: http://www.pkpaddles.com/resources.html It has been interesting to read the "horror stories" of others when dealing with the rental scene. My local paddleshop (Pacific Wave, Warrenton, OR) seems to take the high road, insisting that renters take pump and paddlefloat, and not renting surf stuff to people they have not checked out. In addition, their instruction is priced to make getting decent preparation easy. The best rental story I have is that of Adam, who showed up with a big grin and a little espresso machine at our campsite in the Broken Group, Barkley Sound, a couple summers ago. He had rented a very "experienced" Seaward single from a local outfitter, and took off the next day to get some photos. When he returned to camp, his rear deck was almost completely submerged -- how he avoided capsizing, I'll never know! When we yarded the rear hatch off, we found several gallons of sea water inside, sloshing around with food, wine bottles, and the like. We located the breach (a 4 - 6 inch-long split at the tail of the keel), which had occurred because of client wear and a very thin layup. After drying the surfaces, some duct tape got Adam safely down the road. It was funny at the time, but now I wonder at the incompetence of the outfitter. I've noticed since that other Seaward singles come with a plastic "wear strip" in the spot which had failed for Adam. -- Dave Kruger Astoria, OR no affiliation with PK Paddles or Pacific Wave or Seaward *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************Received on Fri Oct 15 1999 - 01:28:17 PDT
