The Thule and Yakima racks use car-specific clips that are purchased
separately. If you went this route you would have to have a number of
clips, not to mention having to adjust the width of the towers each time.
Not the way to go.

I have seen window fit racks that might serve your purpose (sort of like the
old drive up restaurant trays). Also, I have seen ski racks that are held
down magnetically. I don't have any experience with either type so I can't
speak for how they work.

Subject: [Paddlewise] Off topic--ski racks

Now that I am renting cars rather than owning, I am in need of a
cross-country ski rack setup that could be used on a variety of cars,
all without rain gutters and all without factory OEM roof racks.

Since many on this listserver also ski, do any of you know if there is
such a thing on the market as a ski rack that could be used on just
about any new car? In the days when cars all had rain gutters this was
no big deal, except for standing out in the cold adjusting the length of
the rack or of the steel bands whose hooked ends wrapped around the rain
gutters. Are the hooked ends of the bands now set to grab the inside of
door frames or other points of gutterless cars? Or am I out of luck?

I suspect that nowadays ski racks are matched to specific cars or are
meant to fit on factory racks or the standard bars of Thule, Yakima and
the like.

I thought of asking our Floridian friends, Bob Denton and Sandy Kramer
among others, but, while the rest of us are trying to remember ever
hearing the sound of snow flakes on water, they are still trying to
figure out what snow is. :-)
