If "he" decides to sew it on (as opposed to "gluing"), please tell "him" to seam seal the stitches like we do for tents. The needle pricks the fabric and makes teensy holes. Seam sealant is available at, obviously, camping and such stores, and also the likes of Wal-Mart.
