The Fox 40 has a well deserved reputation, but there is a louder whistle and it is the one in the Subject line - the Storm Whistle. That's a brand name and for a picture, look below the fox 40 photos on this web site: http://www.fastmed.com/Whistle.htm The Storm is bigger than the Fox 40 and has the drawback of relying on a pea in a chamber*, but is really, _really_, REALLY loud. As far as I know, it's available only in orange. I have both Fox 40s and a Storm Whistle and would highly recommend the latter, for kayaking and just about anything else. Mike *The problem with the pea is that it could freeze up in cold weather. This is a problem for hockey referees and is one of the motivating factors cited in the development of the Fox 40. The Fox uses three sound chambers that each put out a slightly different pitch. The constructive and destructive interference of the three different frequencies causes a set of beating frequencies and that produces the pulsing that allows the elimination of the pea. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************Received on Sun Oct 31 1999 - 07:51:07 PST
