Hi,
I've got a chance to buy a Necky kayak from a private
party in Canada. I live in the US. Does anybody know
how the US customs and duties work for buying a kayak
in Canada and bringing it into the US? ALso does
anyone have any ideas of who to hire to transport the
kayak from Canada to California? I appreciate any info
you have. Thanks, Mike

Should not be any customs fees or duties -- NAFTA eliminated that stuff for
practically everything. Got several buddies who bought yaks in Canada and
drove homw with them. There was some funny business about their sales tax,
though. Don't remember the details. Bet Phil torrens from MEC knows the
rules, though. He's on the list.

Transport? I bet you find somebody reliable on this list who will do it for
less than a hundred bucks. (Not me, unfortunately, I'm workbound right now.]

My understanding is that there is a 15% surcharge which is refundable if you
bring the boat into the US. I have no idea how that works but Current Designs
told me something of this when I was talking about getting a Gulfstream up there.
Maybe contact a retailer up there and they can tell you or contact the Canadian
government in the area you plan to bring it back from. If this is private there
be no issues at all. We don't have taxes on private transactions down here and it
may be the same up there. You may just have a friend drive it back and need no
papers or anything. I'd guess this is more likely the case. They may just need a
bill of sale but most likely not. I wouldn't think to have one if I was planning
on crossing the border to paddle.

Thanks for your (misplaced) faith in my all-emcompassing knowledge. I
checked with our shipping folks - we almost never ship boats to the states,
and when we do, they are new, not used, so we can't help, I'm afraid. Best
bet would be to go straight to the horse's mouth and phone US customs. I'd
suggest making a note of who you talked to, and what tarriff number or
bulliten they referred to, in case the agent you encounter when you're
actually bringing the kayak across has a different interpretation of where
it falls in the bureacratic scheme of things.

If live outside of Canada and buy something in Canada, you are entitled
to sales tax rebates. Federally, you've been hit with 7% GST. That
gets refunded from the folks in Ottawa. The remainder is from the
province you purchased it in and varies in percentage*. Most provinces
charge around 8%. That totals the 15% you were quoted. You have to
get special forms for the rebates and save your sales receipts.
