I just had a look at the rule website.
http://www.rule-industries.com/pumps.htm

they have some automatic pumps new this year with a built in float switch - the 'rule-mate' pumps . they go on when water reaches 2 1/8 inch - sounds a bit much for a sea kayak

they have other auto pumps as well in including the 'platinum' pumps that sense water presence by impellar resistance. It doesn't say but I'd assume from their method of water detection they would turn on with less than 2 1/8 inch of water. Problem with this is they draw power at regular intervals to check for water. Rule claims .24 amp hours per day for the 500gph pump. Sounds OK except for longish multiday paddles -maybe.

has anyone tried these auto pumps. Would get rid of the switch issue on sea kayaks.

....That's true, but when I considered that there are many days when I don't
get 3/4 inch of water into my cockpit, the esthetics of the pump turning on
and off willy-nilly bothered me.
