The following is about a mishap for the Clearwater. It's the replica of
a Hudson River sloop that Pete Seeger got going a few decades ago as
part of the effort to clean up the waters of the Hudson.

If anyone can help or wants to attend that fund-raising little sailing
trip, get in touch with them.

Fellow River lovers,

I am calling for rescue to anyone who might be able to
help the Clearwater - for those who don't know it is a
106' Hudson River gaff sloop (replica of 1850's cargo
craft). It belongs to a really terrific environmental
and educational organization of which I have become a
board member. They are largely responsible for the
much cleaner state of the Hudson River today.

A crisis - Sat 10/16 they had a docking mishap at
South St Seaport. Briefly, they were making a turn
between two piers (very difficult anyway) when the
steering cable snapped. Due to the amazing heroics and
steel nerves of the captain Gioa Blix and her crew,
they were able, by an instant, to jump the engine room
amidships and using voice relays from the tiller,
maneuver the boat to a safe rest at the dock. No
injuries, no damage to the Clearwater, no bowsprit
(30' long) implanted in the side of the Peking, etc.

However, they did smash to smithereens their beautiful
yawl boat that hung in davits from the stern. They
can't sail without one. They have a 4 or 5 day loaner
but still need a boat to finish the last few weeks of
the season. It needs to be around 17' or so and
appropriate for serving as a launch for at least 5
people and use in man-overboard rescues.

They need a temporary loan for the season, but will
also need a permanent replacement for the future. The
crew does virtually all the work on the boat and I'm
sure they could give some loving care to a boat
anybody might care to donate. Clearwater is, of
course, a 501(c)3 charitable organization.

Also - I am personally (in a fund raising effort)
trying to fill up a public sail from the 79th St. boat
basin on Sunday 10/31 from 10am to 1 pm. I am
providing food and there will be some sort of music
(probably the talented crew). The cost is $20 per
person ($12 per person for ages 0-12, over 65 or
disabled)

Hope yawl can come!

Thanks and fair winds,

Kate Herman
