I did a race a few weeks back, "the great misery island race" where at the
awards ceremony the results presentation was:

know where you finished. So, who was the first person back to the beach?"

"You win first overall"

"Who was the first kayaker"

etc.

"Who finished last?"

Awesome fresh homemade seafood chowder at the finish...

The races put on the the local rowing clubs all have this same feel
to them. A little organizing, a fun race, and tasty food. A previous
race was $1.50 an oar or $3 for a kayak with one double bladded paddle.
