Go to Preferences>Messages>Message Wrapping>and check "Wrap to window width". This is the path to follow in 4.5, and though I know this preference setting exists for older versions, I am not sure if you can access it the same way. I would just try looking for verbage that sounds familiar in your preferences settings - it might be called "wrap long lines".
