And also from this newbie ....A VERY big thanks to all. I have learned SO much from this list, especially regarding safety. While waiting to accumulate the pennies needed to purchase (in the spring of 2000) my first kayak, a plastic Perception Shadow, plus paddle (love those Werners :-) ), PFD, and roof rack, my list is expanding with long johns, dry top, Polartec and/or wool vest and pants, whistle, strong light, paddle float, flotation bags, and on and on. Many of these things I never would have considered without this list. I went to the local outfitter last night to drool (a very common occurrence these days) over "my :-)" Shadow and each time I go there I know more and more about what I'm seeing. Last night I inspected wet suits, long johns, dry tops, and both Fox 40 and Storm whistles and I can carry on an intelligent conversation with the experienced kayakers who work at this wonderful store. It felt great !!!!!!!! I will be a newbie out there paddling with respect for the water and weather and as prepared as I can be. I grew up on the water (eastern Long Island) and spent every summer rowing and paddling my little white dinghy around the creeks and salt marshes and out into Peconic Bay so I have "salt water in my genes". I sure wish I had discovered kayaking 40 years ago !!!!!!!!!! Look at all the years that have been wasted. Living in North Carolina now, I intend to start on the many lakes we have in this beautiful state, perfect my skills, learn a good roll (the local outfitter has weekly roll practice sessions throughout the winter in an indoor pool) and then "graduate" to coastal kayaking along North and South Carolina - particularly the Intracoastal Waterway. I may never go out on the "open ocean" but I sure will have the knowledge (if not the experience) to stay safe and within my skill level from reading this list. Thanks and keep up the good info. I have several friends who want to start kayaking and I am strongly encouraging them to join this list and learn before heading out.
